Intent

I wanted to explore the performance of masculinity among young men growing up in inner city environments. The ways identity becomes armour, and how expression is shaped by survival.

Exploration

Serious Tingz examines the iconic screwface not just as an expression, but as a social code. A mask worn to signal strength, conceal vulnerability, and navigate spaces where perception can determine safety.

Expression

Commissioned by director Abdou Cisse, I wrote and narrated the short film, crafting a poetic monologue that interrogates the tension between appearance and emotion. The piece combines spoken word with intimate visuals to unpack the pressure placed on young Black men to appear unshakeable.

Outcome

The film was selected at the BFI Film Festival, received a Vimeo Staff Pick, was recognised by Aesthetica, and nominated for Best British Short Film at the BIFA Awards. It extended beyond the festival circuit, leading to speaking engagements at Tate Lates, workshops at Brixton Prison, broadcasts on National Prison Radio, and coverage on ITV News. The work moved from screen to conversation, opening dialogue around masculinity and emotional literacy in real spaces.
